ProChoice & ProAbortion Efforts Thwart Suicide Prevention

Suicide prevention advocates fight really hard to save human beings in daily life. Reason follows that they would fight just as hard to save human beings in the womb, yet they do not always do that.

Some are ProLife for suicide, but ProChoice or ProAbortion for crisis pregnancy. They forbid killing human beings in one instance, and allow – even encourage – killing them in the other. With this dichotomy, a suicidal person should push back on a prevention advocate with, “Why are you telling me not to kill myself? Life can’t be precious if mothers are legally killing their babies in the womb every day.”

Truth becomes precarious, which is a lie. The lie fractures the integrity of suicide prevention efforts. Trust between the suicidal and the prevention advocates then erodes. See Figure 1.

Both situations call us to raise up the dignity of human life, and we can only do that with congruent messages to those in crisis. Truth will then remain intact. Accord will be struck and it will strengthen the integrity of suicide prevention efforts. Trust between the suicidal persons and the prevention advocates will also flourish. See Figure 2.

Admittedly, we must overcome many socioeconomic and political challenges to keep human beings alive in both scenarios. However, we are fabulously capable of shifting minds and monies to conquer them. So let’s commit to activity that eliminates the scarcity mindset of abortion, and replaces it with the abundant hopefulness of ProLife, i.e., All Lives Matter.

I saw the movie "Unplanned." Not sure if you will go? Put aside all that uncertainty and just go. It doesn't matter whether you identify as ProLife or ProChoice.  It is an eye opener. It is warm; it is unsettling; it is redemptive. Most of all, it is realistic. It is the story of Abby Johnson, a former director of a Planned Parenthood facility where they provided women facing crisis pregnancies, the opportunity, if you want to call it that, to kill the child in their womb. Most people call it abortion, but to me, that label obscures the reality of what is happening.

I want to go to the movie again to pick up more of its nuances. The one that made a lasting impact on me the first time around was this - The young women showing up to kill the child in their womb are in distress. That made sense to me. I mean, of course they are not jumping up and down at the time of their procedure. They are not "celebrating" their abortions like the abortion activists of late. Most of them are distraught, mixed, and uncertain even though they already made the decision to kill the child in their womb.

And now a friend of mine, Paul Murano, is going to live-interview Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelmanther, co-directors and screenwriters of the movie.

No Surprise - Suicide and Abortion are Both About Ending Lives Unjustly

Suicide and abortion are both about ending lives unjustly. In the first case, it is about a person ending their own life. In the second case, it is about a mother ending her child's life. It is no surprise that the two spheres of interest overlap. That is, to prevent suicide, we must value life and human dignity, and to prevent the killing of innocent children, we must value life and human dignity. It has to happen from the start if we want it to happen at the end.

8 Things Every Catholic Should Be Doing Every Day - #4, Tell someone you love them and why

4. Tell someone you love them and why

When I was growing up, my parents were in emotional survival mode. I don't recall one time when either of them told me or any of my five siblings that they loved us. Nor do I remember a time when they shared such sentiments with each other.

On the other hand, my five brothers and sisters and I started telling and showing our children, "I love you," very early on in their lives. We still do it 27+ years later. Our children are happier and relatively more self-assured. I would not attribute that solely to our expressing our love for them, but I believe that was/is a significant part of it. Once you start saying it (and showing it through acts of kindness and love), it fosters a more loving environment than the one created without it. No science; no psychology; no religion. Pretty much speculation, but it's speculation based on a mother's heart, and sometimes that is more reliable than any of the rest.

Every day. Tell someone every day that you love them and why. The why could be because the child is a gift from God and how can any of us not love a gift from God?

2. Smile, Use your manners, Be kind, Give out hugs

Basic social etiquette is called for here, and a little more to show the people in our lives that we love them.  They are simple, but have a powerful effect, both in the short run and in the long run. They are simple, but they are not as prevalent (me included) as we need them to be.

I was reading a piece the other day about my home town. The author was pining for the good ole' days when children respected their parents and did things like those suggested above. How did it turn for the worse? Maybe it occurred when adults stopped giving each other a simple cordial smile upon passing, when they stopped paying attention to having good manners, even for themselves, and stopped being kind and giving out warm and appropriate hugs.

Basically, the world got grumpy. I cannot tell you how many people I pass on the sidewalk, in the halls, and at church who cast their gaze down and say not a word as we pass - until they hear me say hello. Many, but not all, will often reply in kind. 99% are not initiators, however.

I play a game with it now. "Ok, Let's see what this person is going to do..." Inevitably, I am disappointed. Once I overcome that feeling, I ask God to bless us both.

We really need to make a lot of effort if we want to make our lives more pleasant and meaningful, i.e., if we want to get to heaven.

What Are Some Basic Manners?
- Smile when you see another person.
- Say, "Please."
- Say, "Thank you."
- Say, "I beg your pardon."
- Hug your mother and your father as a child and as an adult.
- Open the door for others.
- Help the elderly cross the street.
- Let others, especially pregnant woman, have the last seat on the metro.
- Ask before you borrow someone else's property.
- Let your cell phone or smart phone go to voicemail when you are talking with someone.

Libraries & Sad Update to Unraveling My Father's Suicide

LIBRARIES
I am a strong supporter of the public library system throughout our country. Once I discovered the one in my neighborhood, a new world opened up to me. From writing articles on their computers to borrowing DVD movies of all kinds to borrowing books to borrowing books & movies from across the state to attending discussions on stone wall building to giving a presentation about my book to the locals to volunteering for them and learning about cataloging.

Since May 2015, I have donated several copies of my book to the libraries in my area. SAD UPDATE to UNRAVELING MY FATHER'S SUICIDE

It is with much sadness that I share the following news. My cousin Ethan (pseudonym) took his own life on Christmas Eve in the same location his older brother took did the same several years ago. My older cousin shot himself at the top of the Rock Rimmon ledge, while the most recent suicide was done by jumping off that same ledge. Ethan is mentioned on pp. 38 & 50 as having ongoing struggles with suicidal ideation.

I was shocked. For some reason, I thought the suicides in my family tree would stop with the completion of my book. There is no logical reason for that, just an unconscious desire, I guess. I hope you rest in peace, cousins. +

I love helping out with their clothes and their toys

But most of all Lord what I work for these days

is leading their minds back to you and your ways

So he started his mission, this jolly ol’ soul,

The trees were in place and the candy canes hung

but he stared at the fireplace as carols were sung

Something's wrong! said the saint, as it paused his delight

Less than half of the stockings are hanging this night!

I see cars, DVR's, home computers, and more

but I hear not the laughter that I heard once before!

So he checked his list twice but it just didn't jive

there were many more children that were meant to be alive

and revealed the true meaning of naughty and nice:

This first group has children I could never create

my people used barriers and drugs with their mate

The second are the children that had never been born

from the wombs of their mothers they were taken and torn

And the third group are now all the children on earth

they're the ones that did make it through conception and birth

Oh Jesus I'm sorry! ol' St. Nicholas cried

This shouldn't be happening - they forgot why You died!

Help me to show them how to be brave

like the poor Virgin Mary giving birth in a cave!

I Am the hope many don't know, Jesus said

so go forth dear St. Nicholas – my light you must spread

I Am The 51-Year-Old Who Wrote To The 14-Year-Old

I read this article today:

I'm The 14-Year-Old Who Wrote The "Jesus Isn't A Dick So Keep Him Out of My Vagina" Sign In Texas And Was Labeled A "Whore" By Strangers Online

 

Then I wrote to the author:

 

Dear Tuesday,

You write, "I know someone who has had a few abortions. She now says that abortion is bad and she fights against a woman's right to choose." Listen to her. She knows what she's talking about.

As for the mother's right to choose, she has always had the right and always will -- to choose to engage in sex.  That is where the choice begins. She knows the consequences before she engages, and if she wants to be seen as a mature woman, she should either accept the consequences of her decision by giving birth to her baby if she becomes pregnant, or she should not engage in sex at all.

I am praying for you, Tuesday.  I am sure a lot of other people are too. I am hopeful that you will eventually have a conversion (hopefully before you have any abortions yourself) and realize the primary fight of ProLifers is for the baby's right to life.  The woman already has one.

Just remember that someone honored your right to life and brought you to where you are today.  Would you really want to go back in time and ask your mother to consider aborting you? Peace.

Springfield, MA School District Hoping For Free Condoms For Children 12 & Over

"Children as young as 12 in one Massachusetts city are one step closer to getting access to free condoms at school...School officials in Springfield this week approved a measure that got the ball rolling on the plan, aimed at fighting teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, The Republican newspaper reported."  For full article, click here

Oh boy.  Well I've explained my position on this in a previous blog entry from February 14, 2011, so I'll just repeat it here.

"On the other hand, Chris Pham, a member of the Boston chapter of Pure In Heart, which is a Catholic chastity group, claims that, 'Teens [and younger children] are being misled into believing that they can strap on a condom, have sex with whomever, and be safe.'

Chris hit it on the nose: Chastity and abstinence are the missing elements here. Students should be taught about living a chaste life, developing the strength to avoid temptations, saving themselves for marriage, and having true self-esteem.

With free condoms and sex education supporting goodness in that, teens [and younger children] are thinking condoms are the ticket to indulging in underage and premarital sex. I definitely disagree with that, and C.J. Doyle, Director of Catholic Action League, states it well, 'Condom distribution sends the wrong message to students that sexual activity before marriage is normative.'"

This could very well become a reality soon.
